Summer is quickly passing us by as we head into August. The 2010 wedding season isn’t quite over, and we still have our hands full with upcoming shoots. I just recently went on my first shoot with mystic shoot the cake, and thought I would share a little of my experience.

My job is to take “detail shots.” This means my camera gets filled to the brim with pictures of bouquets, gifts, decorations, centerpieces, flowers, shoes, sashes, boutonnieres, invitations, programs, the cake and of course, the rings. This is why having a team of photographers is so great. At the end of the day, our lead photographers have all the formal shots and images of the bride and groom throughout their entire day. These are usually the images you would have framed to remember your special day.

Where do my photographs come in? In the Wedding Album! It’s true what people say, you tend to miss some of the details of your own wedding. Having images of your rings, cake or venue gives the album the same ambiance of the day itself. That way, each time you or your family opens the album, it is like reliving a piece of your most special day. It’s something I most enjoy about detail photographs.

The 2010 wedding season is in full swing. Of course, every wedding season in Mystic is accompanied by gorgeous beach weather, and picture perfect weekends. We’ve already had the privilege of photographing several unions already, and with Summer rolling along, we’re looking forward to even more! However, for those of you visiting the blog, maybe for the first time, you may be wondering what we at mystic shoot the cake do on a daily basis. Perhaps you’ve seen our work, and are curious about what makes mystic shoot the cake tick. Well, on top of this blog, we now have several more options for our patrons:

Every Tuesday-Friday from 10am until 2pm we are updating our twitter. This has become a valuable resource, not only for us to update our patrons, but to help educate past and future brides and grooms. We’ve been able to network with over 100 local vendors, venues, and wedding magazines and we make their best posts available to our followers. If there is a deal on wedding day makeup, you’ll be the first to know about it!

The Power of Prep

It’s finally the big day, and after months of planning and hard-work its time to concentrate on you. To fully enjoy your wedding and all the efforts you have put forth, make sure you pay attention to all your needs today. The less stressed you are, the better you will look and feel. Start the day with some stretching or a leisurely walk to release any tension and give yourself a moment to reflect. Continue to take slow, deep breathes to keep calm and relaxed throughout the day. Eat a balanced, wholesome breakfast to boost energy levels and sustain you until you eat next…most brides barely get to touch their food amongst all the excitment and greetings, so breakfast is key to keep you running. Fruit, yogurt and granola is a light yet filling option, and an egg-white omelet with veggies provides the protein you need to keep yourself energized. Allow enough time for styling, most brides usually allocate three hours to get ready. Hair should be done first, usually taking an hour. Wear a loose shirt that buttons or zips down, so that it does not interfere with your hair when you change. The second hour is used for make-up, and the third is for dressing and any additional prep. Be sure to only put on your dress after hair, make-up and perfumes are set (as the oils in fragrance can discolor your dress.) Have a bridesmaid put together an “emergency kit” to have on hand that includes tissues, nail file, dental floss, breath mints, pressed powder, lipstick, concealor and nail polish etc.

Having grown up in the historic town of Mystic, CT, I have become familiar and intimate with everything from the popular tourist attractions to the lesser known but equally celebrated locales. My mother is a professional harpist and at an early age she taught me to play and, eventually, I even began to accompany her to wedding venues to watch and get a feel for the routine and atmosphere.
Throughout grade school I had a passion for the arts, specifically the human form, which led me to focus on figure drawings in traditional media and portraiture in photography. I applied with a portfolio my senior year of high school to the Savannah College of Art and Design and am currently studying there to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts in photography.
What I love so much about working with people in my photos and portraits is the range of connection the subject makes with the camera. The feel of a photograph changes so much depending on the amount of eye contact and focus that the person whose picture is being taken makes. It can take an image from being personal and close to that of viewing someone in secret, without their knowing.
I believe that the honesty and preciousness of a picture comes from the people in it and the memories they reinforce. This is why I love what I do; I get to reflect that kind of joy through my lens (literally) every time I work with someone.
